history
Discover the rich past of our athletic program, a story of dedication, community support, and the enduring legacy that defines what it means to be a Screaming Eagle.
Screaming Eagles
Reardan became the Screaming Eagles in 2022 after the passage of the Native mascot law. Our school community came together to choose a mascot that reflected our spirit, our history, and our values, replacing the former “Indians” mascot. We chose the Screaming Eagle in direct honor of hometown hero Joe Mann, a Medal of Honor recipient who served in the 101st Airborne Division—the original Screaming Eagles. His courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to others continue to inspire our students and community. Today, being a Screaming Eagle means carrying forward his legacy as one district and one community, making sure every student is known, loved, and learning.
Smith Gym
“I am Smith Gym.
I was built in 1959, an era when a gallon of gas was just 25 cents and a new car set you back only $2,000. I stood tall before man had ever stepped foot on the moon and long before girls’ competitive sports became the cornerstone of our athletic pride.
Through the decades, I have been the silent witness to thousands of energetic students. I have held the echoes of practice for dozens of State Championship teams. My iconic brick exterior has become a landmark of this small farm town—a place where generations of kids have learned to balance a passion for the game with the value of hard work.
Beyond the court, I have been the heart of Reardan’s community, hosting Homecomings, Proms, Graduations, Melodramas, and Reunions. In 1993, I was proudly renamed in honor of Coach Gene Smith, who led our athletes to over 500 wins.
I even stood ready when duty called me to serve as a schoolhouse, sheltering 11 classrooms while our elementary school was being reborn. Today, I stand renewed and renovated, continuing my legacy as the keeper of Reardan’s history and the home of its future.”
